THE TEMPLES OF THE COCKTAIL MARTINI

Bar Tiberio, Capri

It is quite amusing to read negative reviews of this place by some (usually anonymous) customer who complains venomously about its high prices and chronic chaos. My impression is that some people complain because they think that it is their right to enjoy luxury food and drinks paying only osteria prices: these acid reviews show their envy for a luxury world to which they clearly do not belong, and he's angry for that. Frankly, if one is not prepared to pay a little more than average to sip a drink in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, then he is are not worthy of being there: so please stay home, book some cheap mass cruise somewhere out of Italy and enjoy yourself. Let someone else enjoy Capri.

Well, the Martini. If you like good food, theatrical behaviour, Italian traditions, a good Martini and you are, as any man of good taste has to be, fascinated by Capri, then Tiberio is your place. It is on the same level of classic Italian style of Harrys in Firenze or DeMilan in Milano, only different: here you are in the Piazzetta and therefore everything has a special flavour. And, honestly, it's not more expensive than any other luxury establishment in Italy...

I asked for my usual Martini cocktail: very dry, almost no Vermouth, no lemon, only one unstoned olive....stirred, not shaken, please. It came exactly as I wanted it, and very cold and with the unusual twist of a white napkin wrapped around the stem of its classic glass to avoid dripping water (condensation, you understand) on your Rota or Isaia trousers. Yes, because Piazzetta is also a fashion show and sitting at Tiberio's you have a front-row seat to enjoy the continuous, stylish défilé of wealthy Neapolitan ladies flaunting their beauty while their male partners show happiness and joie de vivre like you will never find anywhere else. I'll have Capri anytime, at any price.

And if you are thinking that Capri is too expensive, please remember that you can enjoy a sunset like this only a few yards off the Piazzetta....
