THE TEMPLES OF THE COCKTAIL MARTINI

Il Calandrino, Sarmeola di Rubano

The first impression was quite negative, as the Martini, though prepared quite well, was served on a terribly wrong 'curved' glass, fit only for a Cinzano Spumante or something equally ghastly. The young, eager and extremely courteous bartender answered my protests saying meekly that this ghastly glass was commanded by 'The Chef', someone who clearly has no knowledge of what a Martini cocktail is and has to be and look...luckily this smart chap answered my plea with the right conical stem glass, and he had a bottle of 'Westbourne Strength' on his shelf. He was clearly ready to do something very good in the Martini sector, so to speak

After the Martini-glass mishap was adjusted, we stayed for dinner at the 'Calandrino'. Let's be honest, Anna and I had been at the world-famous 'Calandre' next door in the past, and were not happy with it. Quite expensive of course, but for people used to Vittorio in Brusaporto or Auberge de l'Ill in Illehauserne, not so outworldly: only overpriced, overserved and with a sommelier who sold us the worst Ribolla in the world for a price that could have bought you a good Rolex.... awful!
So we simply cancelled it from our restaurants' list. But if you happen to be in Padova, for example for the brilliant 'Fiera d'Auto d'Epoca', don't discard Sarmeola di Rubano, because 'Il Calandrino', the 'Calandres' bistrot, is exactly what the 'Marchesino' in Milano is for 'Gualtiero Marchesi'; a sophisticated bistrot with better food, better ambience, less stuffiness, more pleasure. The menu is light, fresh, full of good things and 'our' waitress was exceptionally nice, her Venetian accent heartbreaking and her professionality spotless. (She was spectacularly pretty as well.) IMHO, you can't get a better spot in Padova.....
