THE TEMPLES OF THE COCKTAIL MARTINI

Suvretta House Hotel, Sankt Moritz

The Suvretta House is undoubtedly one of Engadin's grandest hotels, full of tradition and with its own grandiose charm. Its bar is elegant but the Martini cocktail leaves a bit to be desired. There was nor gin nor vodka in the freezers, it had therefore to be shaken to be chilled a bit and the glasses were not exactly the ones that you would expect in a hotel of this class (and price....) Moreover, we were not served any of the small sandwiches and other treats that were offered to other guests of the same bar at the same moment; the single mandatory olive was NOT in our glass at the moment of serving the cocktail, and they weren't even brought to our table at first, we had to ask for them. This is a serious flaw.

On the other hand, we must leave to the Suvretta House the honor of being more or less the only place of this type in the world where wearing a jacket and tie are still requested to be served a Martini. This touch of elegance makes the temperature of the Martini a little bit less intolerable; when the bartender will understand that the place of a bottle of fine vodka is in the freezer, and that a litre of Tanqueray 'Ten' would be its ideal companion in those icy caverns, the Suvretta bar will surely improve massively. The appeal session will be held in July, during the days of the British Car Clubs Meeting...
