Overhauling the 409 power steering (January 2017)
|
The 409 was a true luxury car in its time and
mine, chassis number 7355, was the first Bristol to be equipped as a
series component of a power steering system. That was one of the reasons
why I bought her, and I was very happy with it. Recently, though, it began
to work less well. For this reason the
first job that I asked Marco Gordini to put forward in 2017 was the overhauling of
the steering box and power steering pump

The brake disc is quite good, behind it you can see
the ZF steering box and the pump is on the right, barely out of this pic

While overhauling the steering box and servo,
Marco found that the front R/H wheel bearing were in bad shape, so he
replaced them. This may explain why the tire shop had found it impossible
to fix the correct geometry of the front wheels; the 409 tracked straight
as an arrow anyway

23 January 2017
The best way to celebrate the 50th birthday of
'409-7355' (she was built in 1966 and delivered in January 1967) was to
give her a good thorough cleaning and a blast at 100+ mph (on a unlimited
German highway, of course!) to dry everything before putting her to rest
for some time....
