THE TEMPLES OF THE COCKTAIL MARTINI

To be honest, this bar would deserve a higher placement in my 'Temples' list if they did hire some better front-desk people, not the silly 18yo girl that wouldn't reserve you a table for a one-hour Martini cocktail stop. This kind of rude fussiness can spoil a good place, especially as it's a unheard-of practice. I don't think that ANY place in the world has ever refused a request for a reservation, if not because they are fully booked; here they (the girl) say that they simply don't do it. Is perhaps too much work writing a name on a list....? Luckily, the Concierge of the Sofitel am Stephansdom fixed us a table so we were able to enjoy the best view in Wien, a spectacular window facing the Stephansdom at sunset: and the Martini was excellent especially when, the first afternoon we went there, I found a really smart bartender who clearly enjoyed his job and understood the need for a very cold, very dry Martini, stirred, no lemon, one olive. One of the best Martinis that you can drink in Austria.

The beautiful miniskirted waitresses were a nice bonus in this excellent bar; you really have to visit if you happen to be in Wien and need a strong Martini before plunging in a feast of butter-fried Wienerschnitzel.
