THE TEMPLES OF THE COCKTAIL MARTINI

Agenzia del Gusto, Pollenzo

The 'Agenzia' is one of our favourite spots in the Langhe, especially when we get there for Tartufo in November. The restoration of this magnificent complex is a merit of Carlin Petrini and his 'Slow Food' movement, and includes a hotel, a restaurant with bar, the 'Università degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche', the 'Banca del Vino' and so on. It is also placed in a perfect position between Bra, La Morra, Cherasco with its excellent Golf Club and so on. Admittedly, the Martini is a 'urban' cocktail and is slightly out of place in this temple of the traditional gastronomy and oenology of North-West Italy. I did want one anyway when we arrived at Pollenzo after a long day of golf in Biella (another spectacular course, probably the best in Italy....) and the young, smiling and very pretty bartender, Veronica, obliged serving, in a decent stem glass, a quite cold Tanqueray-based Martini that was good enough to call for a second one at dinner time, though there was no olive to go with it. The finger food that came with the Martini was excellent as well and all sourced from local shops; a delicious aperitif before a tasty dinner at the restaurant of the Agenzia. After dinner I had a splendid Barolo Chinato, to keep traditions alive..... |
