THE TEMPLES OF THE COCKTAIL MARTINI

The Gin Corner - Hotel Adriano Rooftop, Roma

Breaking News: The Gin Corner open!

The Gin Corner, 2025

Anna and Barbara with a bottle of 'Gin Corner' gin...

After a long closure due to the Covid epidemic and then a lengthy and complex renovation, the Hotel Adriano Rooftop has finally reopened. Located in Rome, on the central Via d'Ascanio, this beautiful four-star hotel has a key feature for this location: for years, it has been home to  The Gin Corner, one of Italy's absolute temples dedicated to the cult of gin, and in particular to the Martini cocktail.

The idea for this approach came from the charming Barbara Ricci, who, with her brothers, oversaw the renovation and manages the Hotel Adriano Rooftop. The Gin Corner is her creation, now made even more enjoyable because the classic winter bar, on the ground floor and already well-known to all enthusiasts, has been joined by the Rooftop Bar, its summer version on the fifth floor, a beautiful terrace overlooking the rooftops of Rome. It was therefore absolutely necessary to come and meet Barbara and the other friends of the GC with the perfectly good excuse of the Jubilee Year, and it was a real pleasure.

Gin is, as usual, present in a wide variety of forms, with a comprehensive selection of both classic and Navy Strength gins, and, as is now almost mandatory in establishments of this calibre, even a dedicated gin, produced in this case by enthusiasts in Tuscany. The "GUD" is produced in both regular and Navy Strength versions, appropriately enough; and it is with these two gins that we asked to create a Roman version of the "Pasini Express," 2/3 regular house gin, 1/3 Navy Strength (the elegant 'Amerigo Vespucci'), just an olive with its stone and no lemon.

Served appropriately chilled, in the right glasses, The Gin Corner Martini is a top choice for the Martini enthusiasts. In terms of quality and impeccable service, the Gin Corner’s Martini, accompanied by high-quality finger food, is amore than plausible alternative to the Dukes in London or the Georges V in Paris. Small wonder, then, if this has long been a favorite haunt of Martini enthusiasts, and that it is the official site of 'Martini and Friends', a Martinista's dream club chaired by great connoisseur Valerio Berruti.

Congratulations, then, to Barbara and the entire Ricci family for reviving this cult gin venue to the highest standards, with the added bonus of being right in the heart of the immortal, magnificent Rome…

'Pasini Express MkV', Gin Corner Edition

Niente limone! Ecco il 'Pasini Express' MkV, The Gin Corner Edition.

E adesso, alla salute....

Martini Temples- The Gin Corner in Rome

Passing by Rome on my way to the Philpa classic-cars Concours in Athens, we decided to stay at the Hotel Adriano especially because some excellent Martinista did recommend its bar, the aptly named 'Gin Corner'. I obviously had high hopes to find a really good 'Martini Temple' here, and, for once, I was not disappointed. Au contraire, I found in this corner an exceedingly amiable host (Ms Barbara Ricci), two impeccable, young but expert bartenders (Mr Patrick Pistolesi and his deputy Davide) and....65 different gins!

What is
really good, in this 'Corner', is that you can have a good talk with Patrick discussing the different gins that he stocks; the shelves of the 'Corner' are groaning under the weight of dozens of gin bottles (he keeps a few gin bottles in the freezer as well) and he claims that he also stocks many different vermouths, though I cannot be sure of that because I was too busy enjoying the differences between the 'Death Door' (very similar to my own home-distilled 409) and other 'botanics' to bother about the stuff that we usually just look at from a distance, i.e. Martini Extra Dry or Kina Lillet

Patrick understood perfectly my need for a very cold, very dry Martini, stirred, no lemon, one olive. One of the best Martinis that you can drink in Italy, if not the best; better still, I enjoyed some other 'testers' for as many different gins....

The Adriano, only a few yards from the Parliament and deep in the heart of ancient Rome, is a really enchanting hotel as well. Don't miss it!

Piperno in Roma

...and while you're in Rome, please remember that a good Martini (or 2 or 3) are best followed by a hearty meal; Piperno's gricia offers you one years' supply of carbohydrates and cholesterol while giving you the excuse of a nice 20 minutes' walk from the Adriano to this superb, old-style Hebrew restaurant just behind Rome's Temple

The Adriano's breakfast room is well stocked even before 7 am, and that is a good thing. The weary traveller needs it after an evening of pleasant gastronomic debauchery
