Sony STR-3800L (1976-1978) |
 |
The STR-3800L is a classic AM/FM receiver built from 1976 to 1978, with the
unmistakable 'face' of the best Sony '70s equipment. I found it abandoned
in a mall parking lot, I took it home, cleaned, connected: it works!
Actually everything in in good condition, down to the lamps in the dial and instruments.
More than good enough, and with the added satisfaction of having saved a
classic Sony from an undeserved sad end in the dump |

Please note the big Nichicon cap |
 |
Inside the STR everything is a little dusty but apprently it has never
been touched. An unusual detail: the chassis number plate (below) reports
'Made in Korea', but the chassis of the STR-3800L, once removed the wooden
sides (above), is stamped 'Made in Japan'. This may suggest a better
overall quality |

Removing the big volume knob for cleaning was not easy, it was very
hard to pull it out and I was afraid of damaging something. Following the
suggestion of friends like 'rwartner' from the awesome
AudioKarma site I used two spoons as levers on opposite sides of the
knob, and the knob yelded at last. I could take a picture of one spoon
only, but two are better; please note (above) the felt 'cushion' to
protect the front panel from damage during the operation |
 |
I have bought also a very nice STR-4800 with the tuning string
snapped...how can one repair that one? |
