While researching for the history of the EMTs and other extremely sophisticated decks (Telefunken and AEG, on a lesser level Bourdereau, Clément, Schlumberger, VEB etc.) used by the Radiotelevisione Italiana and the other top-level European broadcasting stations, some of the older and more experienced former engineers of the RAI of the 'Golden Era' sometimes mentioned the 'Carrson'. They always spoke of that legendary machine with great respect, saying that it was one of the best products of the laboratories of RAI in Turin, that at the time were worthy of their German equivalents. The history of those few 'Carrsons' has been shrouded in mistery since their dismission, as RAI was forced by law to destroy all the machines that were declared 'obsolete' and none officially survived. Luckily, a few of them managed to escape the crusher, and I am extremely proud of having had the pleasure to purchase one in August 2011, courtesy of Alessandro Coppi, creator of http://www.autocostruire.it/ , who found it in a flea market. Il piatto pesa 5,4 chilogrammi e ha un diametro di 40 cm nella parte superiore, 32 cm è il diametro dell'anello gommato a contatto con la puleggia del motore. Il perno ha un diametro di 17 mm		The platter weighs 5,4 kgs and has a diameter of 40 cm (16") whilst the rubber ring in contact with the motor pulley is 32 cms. The diameter of the main shaft is 17 mm

In questo caso, essendo la Fairchild monofonica, sono usati solo i due connettori orizzontali, ma il braccio sembra già pronto per testine stereo secondo il classico layout EMT/Neumann 'a diamante'		In this case, being the Fairchild head a mono cartridge, only the two horizontal pins are used, but the arm looks ready for stereo, with 4 pins arranged in the familiar EMT/Neumann 'diamond' pattern
Il preamplificatore non sembra funzionare e nessuno ne ha lo schema. Un amico e grande tecnico lo ha restaurato		The monophonic tube preamplifier does not seem to work, but the schematics are impossible to find. A friend and great specialist of vintage electronics just restored it
Le valvole sono Telefunken, una EF800 e due EE804S		The tube are all German- built Telefunkens, one EF800, two EE 804S
24 Dicembre 2011: un bel regalo di Natale

Più una Fiarchild 215 di scorta....		A DEAR friend came today at my practice with the most wonderful Christmas present: three original Carrson headshells with their original Fairchild 225A/225C cartridges! Plus a Fairchild 215 spare head....
Sono perfette: i colori sullo shell differenziano le testine per 33, 45 e 78 giri		They are all perfect: the different colours on the shell differentiates the heads for 33, 45 and 78 rpm
24 Marzo 2012: una sorpresa
Dopo alcuni mesi di 'fermo' per motivi vari, ho ripreso oggi il lavoro sul Carrson e ho smontato in fondo della bronzina perchè perdeva olio. Non poteva fare diversamente: sul fondo c'è infatti un foro da 2 mm. Non capisco perchè ci sia questo foro e soprattutto come era richiuso.		After several months of stop due to work and other commitments, this morning I've resumed my work on the mighty Carrson and I have disassembled the bearing bottom, as it leaked oil. Small wonder: the bottom plate of the bearing has a 2mm hole. Its meaning is obscure to me and I wonder how this was originally closed.

Il cuscinetto ha un diametro interno di 9 mm, il perno nella sua sezione finale 8 mm, lasciando così 1 mm di gioco mentre il 'gradino' è di 3 mm. Sarebbe più razionale installare un 24x8x7 con la classica sfera centrale 5-7 mm a fare da reggispinta sotto al perno.... Un altro piccolo rebus da risolvere su questa rara macchina		Between the inner ball bearing and the end part of the shaft there is 1 mm of 'play' and 3 mm of difference in elevation. It would seem better to fit a 24x8x7 mm ball bearing and, as a thrust bearing, the classic 5-7 mm steel sphere to relieve the bearing from the weight of the platter..... Another enigma of this rare machine
4 Aprile 2012: la bronzina restaurata
Preso atto dell'inutilità di un cuscinetto a sfere in quella sede, Marco Bugamelli ha creato un anello con l'alloggiamento per una sfera reggispinta da 12 mm		As a ball bearing is useless in the bottom of the sleeve of a turntable like this, Marco Bugamelli has turned a bronze ring holding a 12 mm thrust bearing steel sphere
Il piccolo tappo in Teflon chiude il forellino inferiore della bronzina. Il cuscinetto a sfere è mostrato qui solo per documentazione ma non è stato reinstallato		The small Teflon plug seals the tiny bottom hole of the bearing bottom plate. The ball bearing is pictured for documentation only, obviously it has not been reinstalled
