Jaguar XJ40-XJ6 (1992)

2015

A spectacular dawn in Bologna, eastbound on the A14 highway, 7.25 a.m., Monday 5 January 2015

Details

The XJ40's ECU

The left headlamp has the original H4 lamps, the right one has been fitted with an Osram NightBreaker. The difference is appreciable

We didn't have a really cold winter, but the XJ40's heater was not working very well, so I asked Marco Gordini to check what was wrong. Just a little check, you know. As always, the situation went out of control soon, as the following pictures will prove....

Today (Friday 16 January 2015) EX444BX' interior is a mess. Marco Gordini is trying to find what is wrong with the b***y heater. Unfortunately there is still something wrong and the temperature control is erratic to say the least

A new remote control, expertly installed by auto electronics Guru Francesco Pulega, is a welcome commodity to avoid having to use the key to open the door. The 'black box' complete with 2 nice remote controls is very reasonably priced, but you need an expert to install the lot

Naki kindly supplied me a full set of Sovereign veneers with inlaids ('pinstripes'). Real classy; Andrea Bedosti has stripped them of the old cracked lacquer (pic above, 12 February 2015)

16 February 2015, veneers refinished using a special varnish for (Fender) guitars

Something missing here...

....but the seat is back in place, reupholstered in the correct AEM leather

The 'pinstriped' veneers in place. They look glamorous

With the Sovereign leather covered steering wheel center and pinstriped veneer, the XJ6's interior looks very nice indeed

Who knows? Maybe the interior sensor is faulty, so what's why the climate control is useless, so we've taken this one off the 1994 scapper. Denso quality is allegedly above average

During some work at the body shop 2 fuses failed, one is for the radio, the other for interior lights. The structure and mapping of the fuse boxes is modern enough, at least you don't have just 2 glass fuses for the whole electrics like in my old Bristols

The difference in size between a 1992 XJ40 (right) and its Ford-inspired successor (V8 X300, 2010) is clear in this photo

Despite my efforts with Gliptone Leather Cleaner, water, etc, the original passenger's seat leather still shows some dirt....does anyone have any 'secret' to clean it well? Thanks!

18 June 2015

A leaky steering box was not expected, as a rebuilt one was fitted only a few months ago....going under the XJ6 to identify the leak allowed me to track yet another number, this time identifying the complete 'Front Suspension Assembly' (Serial Number 496012 in this case).
Marco Gordini was altogether able to fix the yet non-working Cruise Control, a delight in highway driving

22 June 2015

A malfunctioning in the starting of the engine made us check the fuses in the right box. We found that the A2 and B1 fuses, protecting the A/C L and R fans, were in this condition (but not interrupted yet). Changing them made the fans work better, I suspect that these were too warped by heat to make a good contact

As the engine would still start and then die gradually after a few seconds of rough running, we checked the connectors under the passenger's side of the dashboard. We found this black wire hanging....what might this be for?
Luckily this very unusual defect disappeared suddenly as it had appeared, and I was able to drive confortably home. It was probably a loose fuse in the left fusebox, the one controlling the fuel pump

30 June 2015

The A/C system of my XJ6 is giving me some headache. Now that the heatwave expanding all over Europe is pushing outside temperatures over 35°C, the freshly-overhauled compressor packed up leaking oil everywhere, so it has to be changed fitting a new one instead. But another problem, one that will surely remain even after the new compressor will be installed, is that even with the ventilation fans running fast, very little air seems to be forced out of the grilles of the ventilation system. We have checked the bottom flap, as shown in the picture above of the box seen from the right side (Pag. 151 of the Workshop Manual published by M.A.P. Books) and it seems to move freely, so the problem must be the top flap, that could (must) be blocked in a closed position, I guess. What do we have to dismantle to get access to that top flap and see if it opens or not? What are the other air passages that could have been obstructed by some obscure respiratory disease, that I might tell my guys to inspect?

13 July 2015

I had some trouble starting the XJ40 since a couple of weeks (the engine sometimes started then died as if the fuel pump was dead) and we couldn't figure out why. Marco Gordini took the matter in his hands as the Jag wouldn't start after we got back home with the 'new' 1995 XJR; after a long very careful inspection the culprit was found and it was this nasty little box installed sometimes during the various lives of my XJ40 in between the electrical lines of the fuel pump (was it part of an anti-theft device?) and obviously making a mess of the already not so bright performance of the onboard electronics....removing it cured all faults

2 August 2017, EX444BX comes back to life

After a prolonged stop in Emilianauto's garage, EX444BX was resurrected for the summer holidays. It looks as nice as ever

On our way to Versilia, a stop along the old A1 'Panoramica' highway. 41°C, luckily the freshly overhauled A/C of the XJ40 worked flawlessly

Back in Forte dei Marmi, where classic Jaguar saloons really belong....

Jaguar XJ40 1992

Parked on the Lungomare of Forte dei Marmi, the XJ6 still a beauty. Shadows getting longer mean that summer is coming to its end

10-12 November 2017, EX444BX travels to Pesaro, Cattolica Fano and Cartoceto...

Autumn foliage near Cattolica

The Municipio in Cartoceto, seen from its Castle

'Brasserie' in Riccione is a very elegant place and Sunday lunch was absolutely excellent, with a spotless service
