Jaguar
XJR
|
I liked a lot the XJR since it was first introduced, in 1995, and
drove several of them (both inline-6 or V8s) on loan from Jaguar Italia
when I was writing road tests for
AutoCapital and other magazines. I'm enjoying my 1992 XJ6 as a classic
daily-driver, so progressing to a supercharged model seemed a
logical thing. I really wanted a 6-cylinder model, the V8 being
(IMNSHO) a bit
less in the style of the Coventry firm

|
I checked several XJRs, but at the end I decided to buy this one. It was partly
dismantled as the owner begun a partial restoration, but the project stalled and
I was able to buy it at a reasonable price, with lots of spares to go with
it. Of course the final cost of reassembling it, repainting, fixing
several issues etc will be quite high.... The first order for spares cost
£750+, and I'm afraid that this will be only the beginning

The interior is complete, but the driver's seat is in a bad shape (as
always)

The original alloys are almost new, and this was a factor in deciding to buy
this car

159,704 kms, or 95,000 miles

The roof lining has been removed but it's ready to be refitted

Monday 13/07/2015, Marco Gordini and myself picked up the XJR....
|

|
...and after less than 10 miles we found ourselves stranded with an overheating
engine and a dramatic loss of coolant. Marco at once diagnosed a blocked thermostat, removed it
(asbestos hands?) and put 6 litres of water back
in the engine. The trip to Bologna, after that first mishap, was
mercifully uneventful
|

|
At this point the XJR had been mended but the XJ40
refused to start
again, a most embarrassing situation. Eventually, we managed to drive both
home....

Among the many interesting features of this 1995 XJR is the steering
wheel, that is still an all-leather affair: I never really liked the
'half-wooden' wheel of the Jaguars from 1996 onwards
|
The excellent XJ40.com Forum caters also for X300/X306 etc, and it's a
GREAT Forum. Recommended!

Several details of my 'new' XJR. It's in need of a lot of TLC but I'm
sure that it will come out good
|

|

|
Donnelly mirrors were high-tech in 1995, fitted to Audis, BMWs,
Jaguars. They became
famous for their 'fluid' leaks and thus for this kind
of defect.
|
My XJR still has its original triangle

|
The main tool set in the trunk, stored under the emergency spare tire,
is complete, whilst the original tool tray fitted in the engine bay
(above, right) is missing. I have to find one, possibly complete
