Jaguar XJR 2nd part: recommissioning

24 July 2015. The main worry about AJ766AX was the condition of the windscreen surround, where rust was evident. This called for the removal of the windscreen at Bedosti's bodyshop in Faenza, the complete sanding/ repairing of the metal frame and a careful priming of the area before the refitting of the glass |

Sanding/polishing the black paint did get a good result |

The remote was not working, even with new Varta batteries. A thorough cleanup fixed it, but how do I order a spare copy of this remote controller and, most important, how do I reprogram it for my car? |
The remote works now and I've fitted to its ring a key fob that I make for
every car that I drive personally |

Fitting new rubber, as the old Bridgestones were really too old and worn out. I chose Dunlop's SP Sport Maxx GT, homologated for 300 km/h |
The wheel badges had turned a curious shade of dull pink and they frankly did look quite strange on this black car |

An ominous 'clunk' while passing over sleeping policemen prompted us to look under the XJR and we found that surface rust was not as bad as it looks in this picture, but a large spoiler panel was presumably missing |
A few days later, a graphite treatment of the XJR's underside improved everything considerably; the underside tray has been located and will be refitted once the Ferragosto holidays will end |

The radiators, condenser etc were 'loose'. Some sturdy rubber grommets and more work fixed this.... |
...but the real culprit for that worrying 'clunk' was the disintegrated gearbox rubber mount. Replacing it with a similar rubber in good condition eliminated the 'clunk'. Now I need to find the original rubber mount, and a new rubber steering rack gaiter and 4 door handles gaskets as well |

A spare clock panel found in the mass of parts that came with my XJR. The supports are broken (as are in the panel fitted now in the car) and I can fix them once I've removed the main A/C panel....it will take some time, I gather |
The fuse box in the rear compartment was quite messy to say the least.... cleaning and refurbishing the whole area, having fitted a new strong (100A) battery) is never a bad idea |

The elegance of a classic Jaguar is at home in Forte dei Marmi, and AJ766AX flaunted her patina with real class in the subdued style of Versilia |

This elegance has to be celebrated, once the car has been functionally recommissioned and (almost completely) restored, with a proper Martini on the patio. I like Tanqueray standard-strength gin, that I mix with Blackwood's 60° marvel to create the latest edition of my 'Pasini Express', really cold... and it shows, I think |
