'AUTOCAR', 16 August 2000 issue: "Lack of weight aids fine handling, lively performance and great braking IT'S DIFFICULT to know just how much knowledge Audi gleaned from the mistakes made by the A-class. But that's irrelevant now anyway. The bottom line is that Audi has built a similarly conceived but far better executed car than the A-class. The best thing about the A2 is that it isn't merely a design exercise. Yes it's a car to look at and sit in and to touch it's also a riot to drive, which is what distances it most dramatically from the clumsy A-class. You climb aboard and marvel at the quality and the space. Then you fire it up and realise that this could, just possibly, be the template for the way all small cars should be made in the future. It's nimble and sporty without being in any way aggressive or threatening. It's fast yet frugal. Small but roomy. Inexpensive (when viewed from the long-term perspective) yet at the same time impossibly desirable. It's the car the A-class always should have been. (VERDICT): The most desirable supermini in history." |
